Our Team

Scott Woods

I split my work time between running the business side of West Arete Computing and contributing to the technical development. I also make sure that we have the time to contribute back to the programming community, through contributions to Rails itself, and through the open source software that we write on company time, such as the assert_request Rails plugin.

I have been programming since I was old enough to type. I've been working with Ruby since 2002, and with Rails since version 0.7 (whenever that was; 2004?). Database design and computer security have been long-term interests of mine. I have a B.S. in Computer Science from Penn State University.

Bill Peterson

In my role as Senior Software Developer I bring a long and diverse background in both computing and scientific research to our projects. My current work represents a refocusing on programming, which initially ignited my interest in computing. I believe the culture and commitment of West Arete Computing makes for a great work environment that produces a high-quality product and very satisfied customers and developers.

Sally Woods

Sally handles a lot of the day-to-day work of running the business, which helps the rest of us focus on our customers and writing software. She has a long history of helping to build successful organizations.

Jeff Buechler

Jeff is our system administrator. He develops our server infrastructure, responds to problems, and generally keeps things running smoothly so that we can each focus on our work. Bill and I (Scott) have worked with Jeff for about 10 years now, and he's still one of the best system administrators that I know.

Others

In addition to our core team, we have a group of trusted graphic designers and specialists that we contract with regularly. While they may not be employees of West Arete Computing, they're just as much a part of our team.

Our Name

"West Arete" is a climbing term. An arete (rhymes with barrette) is the sharp, steep, outside edge of a cliff or mountain. It's derived from the Greek word "arete", which literally means "virtue" or "excellence".

Climbing routes were traditionally named after the feature that they followed, combined with the compass direction that it faces. Hence names like The Northwest Face of Half Dome , or The East Buttress of Middle Cathedral Rock

"West Arete" doesn't refer to a particular climbing route in this case (although routes with that name do exist), but we aspire to the same virtue and excellence that the Greek root implies.
