In response to the challenges posed by remote formats during the COVID-19 pandemic, West Arete collaborated with Internet2 and InCommon to develop the CAMPfire Social Tool. These organizations, known for providing essential software and identity services to U.S. colleges and universities, faced a significant hurdle: ensuring their global conferences were accessible to all attendees, including those using screen readers and other assistive technologies.
Understanding the critical role of accessibility in fostering inclusive academic communities, West Arete’s team engaged with the community to design, develop, and deploy an open-source application that guaranteed a first-class experience for every participant. The CAMPfire Social Tool was meticulously crafted to address the specific needs of users requiring assistive technologies, ensuring seamless social interactions in a remote setting.
This initiative underscores West Arete’s dedication to creating solutions that not only meet technological demands but also prioritize user inclusivity and community well-being. By enabling a more accessible and engaging virtual conference experience, the CAMPfire Social Tool exemplifies how thoughtful software design can enhance the broader academic ecosystem.
For several years, West Arete ran regional programming groups such as the State College Ruby Group and “Hacky Hour.” These gatherings provided a platform for the local developer community to share knowledge and connect. By hosting numerous speakers and talks, Hacky Hour facilitated the formation of jobs, gigs, and partnerships, fostering a vibrant and collaborative tech ecosystem in the region.
New Leaf Initiative, a community-oriented coworking space in State College, Pennsylvania, supported creatives, entrepreneurs, and professionals until its closure in January 2022. Located across the street from West Arete’s offices, it offered a beautiful downtown workspace and fostered community connections. Over 12 years, West Arete contributed sponsorship funding, membership, volunteer time, and board direction, playing a vital role in the initiative’s success.
The Summer Founders Program provides $10k each, mentoring, and space to several startup teams, allowing them to focus on their ideas for an entire summer.
